The Immediate Protocol After Highway Blowouts in Dubai (0–60 Seconds)

Driving in the UAE this summer? Follow these car safety tips by Dubai Police - Emirates 24|7

A tyre blowout at high speed especially on Sheikh Zayed Road – is one of the most frightening situations a driver can face. Knowing exactly what to do in the first seconds and minutes can save lives and also ensure any car insurance claim is handled smoothly later.

This guide sets out a clear, step‑by‑step protocol for high‑speed blowouts in Dubai, explains key highway safety and legal points, and outlines how to deal with your car insurance Dubai claim afterwards.

If a tyre explodes or rapidly deflates at speed:

0–5 Seconds: Stay Calm and Hold the Wheel

    • Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands.
    • Keep the wheel as straight as possible to avoid a violent swerve.

5–15 Seconds: Do NOT Slam the Brakes

    • Do not brake hard this can destabilise the car further, especially with a front‑tyre blowout.
    • Gently ease off the accelerator and let the car slow down gradually.
    • Keep your foot away from the clutch in manual cars until the car stabilises.

15–30 Seconds: Signal and Move Safely to the Shoulder

    • Once speed has dropped and you have control, signal right (for UAE roads).
    • Check mirrors quickly and gradually steer toward the hard shoulder or a safe refuge area.
    • Avoid sudden lane changes; one controlled lane at a time is safest.

    30–60 Seconds: Secure the Vehicle

    • Bring the car to a stop well off the live lane if possible.
    • Engage the handbrake and put the car in “P” (auto) or in gear (manual).
    • Turn on hazard lights immediately.

If you cannot reach the shoulder (e.g., traffic or total loss of control risk), your priority remains to keep the car stable; stopping in a lane is dangerous but still safer than losing complete control.

Post-Blowout Highway Safety & Legal Rules in Dubai

Once the car is stopped move Yourself and Passengers to Safety

    • If it is safe and there is a barrier or verge, exit the vehicle on the side away from traffic. Move behind the barrier or as far from the roadway as possible.
    • Do not stand directly behind or in front of the car; you’re vulnerable if another vehicle strikes it.

    Use Warning Devices such as:

    • Keep hazard lights on.
    • If you can do so safely, place a warning triangle well behind the vehicle (at least 30–50 metres, more on higher‑speed roads).
    • At night or in poor visibility, keep interior lights on so the car is more visible.

    Call for Help

    • For immediate risk or suspected injuries, call 999.
    • For non‑injury breakdowns, contact your insurer’s roadside assistance or Dubai’s authorised road service.
    • Share:
    • Exact location (Sheikh Zayed Road direction, nearest exit/landmark)
    • Your vehicle details
    • That you’ve had a tyre blowout and are on the hard shoulder

Do Not Attempt Dangerous On‑Road Tyre Changes

On high‑speed roads it is often safer to wait for a tow or roadside professional than to try changing the wheel yourself, especially on the driver’s side next to fast traffic. Dubai authorities strongly emphasise staying out of live lanes; walking on the carriageway is extremely dangerous and can be penalised.

How to Claim Car Insurance in Case of a Blowout

A tyre blowout can lead to only tyre/wheel damage, or Accident damage (you hit a barrier, another vehicle, or roll over)

What to do from an insurance point of view:

    1. Assess Whether There Was an Accident

    • If the blowout caused a collision or significant damage (to you or others):
    • You must report the incident to the police and obtain an official accident report  this is mandatory for accident claims in the UAE.
    • If there was no collision (just a damaged tyre) and no third‑party involvement:
    • It is usually treated as a breakdown/maintenance issue, not an “accident claim”.

    2. Understand What Your Policy Covers

    • Tyres themselves are often treated as wear‑and‑tear items:
    • Pure tyre damage from age, under‑inflation, or road hazards is usually not covered, unless you have a specific tyre‑protection add‑on.
    • Accident damage following a blowout:
    • If you have comprehensive car insurance, damage to your car from a collision or impact caused by the blowout is typically handled under your own‑damage cover (subject to excess and conditions).
    • If you only have a third‑party, your insurer would cover damages you cause to others, but not your own car.

    3. Notify Your Insurer Promptly

    For any accident‑related damage:

    • Contact your insurer or broker as soon as it’s safe.
    • Provide police report number and copy (if required), photos of the scene and damage, your policy and vehicle details

If you insured through a platform like InsuranceMarket.ae, you can often:

    • Report the claim and upload documents online or via email
    • Get a dedicated claims handler to liaise with the insurer and garage.

    4. Follow the Normal Repair Process

Based on your car insurance policy:

    • Agency repair – take the car to the dealer’s body shop with the police report and documents; they coordinate with the insurer.
    • Non‑agency repair – your insurer assigns an approved workshop.
    • For total loss, the insurer may settle based on the car’s market value and policy terms.

Remember: the tyre itself may not be reimbursed, but associated body or mechanical damage from the resulting accident usually can be, if you carry comprehensive cover.

    Conclusion

A high‑speed blowout on Sheikh Zayed Road is frightening, but a clear plan can keep you and others safe:

    • Stay calm, stabilize the car and do not slam the brakes.
    • Move to the shoulder, secure the car and move to safety.
    • Call emergency services if needed, and your roadside assistance for help.
    • For damage beyond the tyre, especially if there’s a collision, follow the UAE’s legal requirement to obtain a police report and then engage your car insurance provider.

Choosing the right car insurance policy in Dubai can help reduce the financial and practical impact of unexpected incidents. Platforms such as InsuranceMarket allow drivers to compare different insurance options, including policies with roadside assistance, which can help cover major repair costs and provide support when you need it most.
