More than two kilometres beneath the surface of the Pacific, where sunlight never reaches and the pressure would crush an unprotected human instantly, researchers have documented a world that is anything but empty. A recent deep-sea expedition has recorded dozens of species believed to be new to science, adding to growing evidence that the deep ocean is one of the richest — and least understood — habitats on Earth.
Using a remotely operated vehicle equipped with high-definition cameras and robotic arms, the team surveyed hydrothermal vents and seamounts over several weeks. The footage reveals forests of glass sponges, fields of tube worms, pale crabs waving their claws in shimmering vent water, and fish that produce their own light in the darkness. Life Powered by Chemistry, Not Sunlight
Unlike almost every other ecosystem on the planet, vent communities do not depend on photosynthesis. Bacteria at the base of the food web harvest energy from chemicals such as hydrogen sulphide pouring from cracks in the seabed — a process called chemosynthesis. Animals from giant clams to eyeless shrimp ultimately rely on these microbes.
Scientists say studying such systems does more than satisfy curiosity. The enzymes that allow organisms to survive extreme heat and pressure have applications in medicine and industry, and vent ecosystems offer clues about where life might exist on icy moons such as Europa and Enceladus. Background research from NASA and oceanographic institutes continues to link deep-sea science with the search for life beyond Earth.
A Race Against Time
The discoveries arrive as pressure grows to protect the deep ocean. Interest in mining polymetallic nodules and vent deposits for battery metals has intensified, and marine biologists warn that ecosystems which took millennia to form could be damaged before they are even catalogued. A single expedition can only sample a tiny fraction of the seabed; vast regions remain unmapped in any detail.
Conservation groups argue that each new species strengthens the case for precaution. International discussions over deep-sea mining rules have repeatedly referenced the pace of discovery — it is difficult to protect what science has not yet named. Reporting by the BBC’s science desk has highlighted how little of the deep ocean floor has been directly observed, despite its role in regulating the planet’s carbon cycle.
Technology Opens the Abyss
The expedition also showcases how quickly deep-sea technology is advancing. Autonomous vehicles can now map terrain for weeks at a time, environmental DNA sampling identifies species from a bottle of seawater, and machine-learning systems help researchers sort thousands of hours of video — work that once consumed entire careers.
For the scientists involved, however, the headline is simple: the deep ocean is full of surprises. Every dive brings back images of animals no human has seen before, in a realm that covers most of our planet. As one researcher put it, “We know the surface of the Moon in more detail than the bottom of our own oceans. That is finally starting to change.”
The team plans to return next year with additional sensors to monitor how vent communities change over time — and to give names to the newcomers now waiting in the catalogue of life.
